Summer 2006
|
|
Congratulations to Emmy Ferry who
was invited to attend the Scotland U17 trials in Glasgow earlier
this summer. For those who don't know Emmy, she has been a
superb shooter for the U15's for the last few years, and played
for the Highlanders in several games at the end of last season.
She will now be joining adult training with the Highlanders
next year along with several of her junior team mates. |

For the first time in it's history,
netball was included int he City
of Edinburgh Council Celebration of Sporting Achievement.
Our very own Jo Simpson was nominated AND shortlisted
for the Local Service to Sport Award. Five nominees were
shortlisted for the award and invited to attend a reception
at Dynamic Earth on 5th June. Although Jo was not the overall
winner, it was fantastic to see that her contribution to
netball at various levels was recognised by the city. Holyrood
would like to personally congratulate Jo for her achievement,
and to thank her for her hard work.

| We know they only chose us because

April 2006 - Wedding Fever
Congratulations to Faryal Khattak on her wedding,
Vaila Hughson on her engagement and good luck to Liz McCambridge

Congratulations to Gabrielle Ryan for her pregnancy
too.
March 2006 - New Umpires!!
Rochelle Taylor, Holyrood's first B Grade umpire,
has now been passed by Netball Scotland as a C Grade Assessor. This
is a fantastic achievement for Rochelle and illustrates her commitment
to umpiring and umpiring development.
Pennie Ball became the second Holyrood B Grade umpire
when she passed her B Grade Umpires Badge on Sunday 26th March.
Dianne Tullis was added to the growing number of Holyrood C Badged
umpires when she passed her practical and theory tests on Sunday
19th March.
Holyrood Netball Club have recently decided to further
reward and recognise their umpires by providing ALL C badged umpires
with a "HNC Umpire" white t-shirt and a HNC finger whistle,
engraved with the umpires initials. When umpires achieve their B

January 2006 - New Holyrood Training Kit
As purchasing officer, Leanne has done a fantastic
job organising new training wear for the club. The order has now
been placed, so here's a taster of what is on the way ...
December 2005 - Christmas Party
On Saturday 10th December, Holyrood Netball Club
held their Christmas Party at the Crags. Boy, did the barstaff not
realise what they had let themselves in for! If you've got any stories
about the night or if you have any (not too incriminating) photos,
please pass them on!
October 2005 - School disco welcome night
To show support to our new sponsors, we organised
our Inaugural HNC Welcome Party for The Crags on Dalkeith Road.
Marie, the organiser, in a moment of drunken stupor had suggested
a “School Disco” theme, and so it began…! Conveniently
for the girls, our fabulous tartan skirts double-up as a school
uniform. The boys on the other hand, had to be more creative…
and so they were! Full marks must go to Stephen Albert and Ross
Bradford for their fantastic schoolboy looks, and to Dino Uno for
wearing his actual school uniform (yes, he still fits it, 16 years
on!). About 50 people showed up, chowing through the fabulous finger
food buffet The Crags provided, dancing on tables, and generally
acting like schoolkids! It must’ve been something to do with
our new sponsorship cards providing some great discounts (4pint
pitchers for £6… not bad!). We now look forward to the
Christmas Dinner on Saturday 10th December.
October 2005 - Glasgow Clubs Tournament
Holyrood entered four teams into the Glasgow National
Tournament, held on Sun 9th October in Kelvinhall.
Thistles:
The Thistles had 6 original team members and 2 guest stars playing
in the Tournnament. Our first mini game was a cracking start with
a big win over Coatbridge - who we have played in the plate final
for the last two years. We also had wins over Highlanders and Strathclyde
Uni, but losing to Scotstoun in the first round. That left us in
second place in our group.
We went through to the cup play offs in the afternoon, with a tough
draw ahead of us. Our group now consisted of the heavy weights -
Bellahousten, Oynx, International and Scotstoun 2. We played well
against the very tall Internationals and at one time it was goal
for goal, however we lost by a narrow margin. We took sound beatings
from Oynx although we were playing some players out of position,
and an even sounder beating from the slick Bellahousten where I
am not sure if we got a goal in at all. We finished the day with
an exciting match with Scotstoun 2, where we took the match with
one goal. This win saved us from being down-trousered in second
round!
We were happy to make the Cup draw, play with the big kids and walk
away with our win in the second round. Although we were a little
dissapointed we didn't win two as the International game was so
close - next year!
Everyone played hard all day, especially Prue who played every game,
and all of them at Centre. It was a pleasure to have Linda and Erin
playing with us who gave 100% all day. Thanks to Lorna, Prue and
Viv who umpired for us.
Tartans:
On Sunday 9th October girls from the Holyrood Tartans and Holyrood
Heathers combined together to play as the Tartans at the National
Clubs Tournament in Glasgow. Although draw against some tough opposition
in the group matches, the Tartans got off to a good start with a
10-7 win against Glasgow team Scottish Pride. The second match saw
the Tartans take on local rivals Edinburgh Onyx. Although beaten
6-12, the team were very happy with the result being the only side
in the pool to gain points for getting half the score of the top
side. Narrow losses to Glasgow teams Bellahouston 2 (8-9) and East
Kilbride (lost by 2) meant that the Tartans had to settle for 3rd
place in their group and a place in the Plate play-offs.
The afternoon session kicked off with the Tartans playing and comfortably
beating fellow Edinburgh side Caledonian 21-11. The following game
was a hard fight against SPRA, and although probably the most physical
game of the day, the team battled well but unfortunately lost narrowly
by just 2 points. The team’s final game saw the return of
first round team Bellahouston 2. The improvement of the team shone
through in this final game and they finished the day with a well-deserved
26-17 win. Unfortunately this was not quite enough to make the semi-finals,
missing out narrowly in goal differences.
It was a great day for the Tartans where they faced
some tough and different opposition. The win over Bellahouston 2
was especially memorable as the team are known to be a good club
and it's great that Edinburgh teams are showing the Glasgow clubs
that we can provide some good competition. Special thanks must go
to Jane Carlin who not only played for us, but umpired seven games
throughout the day.
Heathers:
The Heathers team for the National Tournament, made of Celts, Chieftans,
Saltires and one Heather, arrived (just) in time for the start of
the tournament. An early rise following a late night for some of
the team. We found ourselves in a draw against Edinburgh Uni, Linwood
and Internationale for the morning competition. Considering we hadn't
played as a team, we played well and had some excellent passages
of play down the court and some excellent goals, especially considering
that the defence for Internationale had height in her favour. We
then went on to play Coatbridge, ENC Scarlets and Cardinal Newman
in the Plate competition and took the opportunity to switch around
positions. Overall it was a good day out and a great opportunity
to check out the netball outfits from the other clubs!
