Information | Umpiring Rota

Umpiring!! An essential part of a good netball match, but not many people like doing it. CENA require that all umpires for league matches have passed the C-grade test. Luckily, Holyrood have 8 C-grade qualified umpires and 1 B-grade (well done Rochelle!). We have a rota, so you don't umpire every week and usually fits in so it's only on a night that you already have a game.

You will really improve your game and help the club by learning to umpire, so read on to find out ways to learn.

Netball Scotland Courses

Umpiring courses are organised by CENA and run by Netball Scotland. Holyrood will pay half of the cost of the course for you. Look out here for upcoming courses ...

Umpires Needed!!

Holyrood Junior Club are looking for umpires to help out at their league matches on a Sunday morning. Matches take place at Craigmount High School and offer an opportunity for new umpires to get a bit of practice at the same time as doing the Junior club a huge favour (contact Jo Simpson - see Team List for contact details).

Holyrood's Umpire Mentoring Scheme

Once you've been on a C-grade umpiring course, you need to get plently of practice before being tested. In order to get qualified as quickly as possible, we will pair an experienced umpire with you to pass on some of their expertise(!) and generally be a point of contact for any queries you might have about the rules etc. They will also run the line when you're umpiring and you can watch them in action too! We really need to get as many people as we can up to C-grade as soon as possible so this should speed things up...

Other opportunities for practice

There are loads of opportunities for you to practice your umpiring and get the required hours - here's some ideas ...

  • The easiest way is probably to use the games played during training - e.g. if your training is at 8 you could arrive 30 mins early to umpire the games being played.
  • Rec netball: Monday nights, JGHS, 8-9.15pm (contact recnetball@hotmail.com)
  • U13 and U15 League games: Sunday mornings 9am-1pm Craigmount High School (contact Jo Simpson - see Team List for contact details)
  • Junior Districts Training: Fridays 3-5pm at Craigmount or Wednesday evenings at St Georges
  • Junior Districts Tournament: various dates, venues and times. Contact Anne Hamilton
